-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Explore. You could use your Cricut Maker or another similar cutting machine.
  • Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Brayer
  • One 12in x 12in sheet of White or Brown Kraft Board (I used a white sheet from this pack for the birdhouse base)
  • Two (2) 12in x 12in sheets of card stock in White
  • One (1) 12in x 12in sheet of PATTERN card stock (something floral, spring or whatever season/event you’re crafting for–for the bird house)
  • One (1) 12in x 12in sheet of PATTERN card stock (for the stand)
  • One (1) 12in x 12in sheet of TEXTURED card stock in a complimentary color to your pattern card stock (you can also use regular card stock. Textured card stock will just add extra detail to the final project)
  • A scrap of Hunter Green and Brown card stock
  • Paper Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue
  • Foam Dots

Instructions

Step 1: Download the 3D Paper Birdhouse Free SVG

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the newsletter form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the 3D Paper Birdhouse Free SVG

Upload the 3D Paper Birdhouse SVG Cut File into Cricut Design Space. The SVG will upload grouped together. Once you have the design uploaded and on your canvas, select the design and then click the ungroup button ONCE in the upper right corner. This will allow you to move the different grouped elements of the file.

Step 3: Change ALL Solid Cut Lines to SCORE lines

Use the scroll bar to the right of the LAYERS panel, scroll down and select ALL the thin cut lines. You should select seven (7) layers. One will be a small rectangle that is part of the perch, the front-side of the house, the back-side of the house, the sides of the house, the roof front, the roof top and the stand. When all seven (7) layers are selected, move your mouse over to the OPERATIONS panel, select the drop down menu and select SCORE. This will change all of the cut lines to SCORE lines. You will notice that they have changed to score lines because they will appear as dashed lines.

Step 4: Hide the ALL elements except GREEN layers; Group and Attach Green Layers

Now return to the scroll bar of the layers panel and hide ALL the file elements except the GREEN layers. You can hide the layers by clicking the layer and selecting the eyeball to the right. You will be left with five (5) elements on the canvas. Each of these five elements should have a score line. Rearrange the elements on your canvas so that they will fit on a 12in x 12in cutting mat/card stock sheet.

You can arrange your elements as I have arranged mine in the picture above. Once you have them arranged, use your mouse to create a bounding box around the elements you want to group and attach together. This step will allow the elements to cut on one mat. Right click in the bounding box to open the drop down menu and select ATTACH or select ATTACH in the lower right corner of your screen.

For example, in the picture above, I created a bounding box and attached the top two elements together. Then I created a second bounding box and attached the bottom three elements together.

Once you have attached the elements, select MAKE IT in the upper right corner.

Step 5: Examine the Mat Preview

After selecting MAKE IT, a new window will open with your Mat Preview. On this screen, you should see that the software has prepared two (2) mats. Check each mat to make sure that it has a SCORE and BASIC CUT operation and that all the elements fit correctly on the mat. After you have verified that it looks correct, select the CONTINUE button in the lower right corner.

Step 6: Card Stock Cut Settings

Once you have selected CONTINUE, your Card Stock Cut Settings window will open. Check again to make sure that your operations are SCORE and BASIC CUT. Add your scoring stylus to your machine. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to the mat. Load your machine and begin your cut. After the cut has finished, return to the main canvas.

Step 7: Cut the Base Inset, Roof Line, Shingles, Perch and Opening

After you have finished cutting the layers and returned to the main canvas, detach the layers from the canvas. You can detach the layers by right clicking on the canvas and selecting DETACH or select the UNDO button in the upper left corner. Return to the layers scroll bar and hide the elements that you just cut. Do this by selecting the eyeball to the right of each layer.

Once you have hidden those layers, scroll through and select the eyeball to unhide the roof shingles, roof front, back layer of house opening and the base inset. These are the textured card stock layers. Rearrange the layers on your canvas so that they will all cut on one 12in x 12in textured card stock sheet. If necessary ungroup and/or rotate the elements. Once you have them arranged to your liking, select them all and ATTACH to your canvas. Then select MAKE IT in the upper right corner.

Your Mat Preview screen will open. Check to ensure that your machine will perform the SCORE and BASIC CUT operation and that all the elements, will cut on the mat. Then select Continue in the lower right corner. Your Card Stock Cut Settings window will open. Again, check the operations of the cut and that your scoring stylus is loaded. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to the mat. Load the mat into your machine and begin your cut. When your cut completes return to the main canvas.

Step 8: Cut the Pattern Card Stock Layers

After you have finished cutting the layers and returned to the main canvas, detach the layers from the canvas (as described in step 7). Return to the layers scroll bar and hide all the textured elements that you just cut. Hide the elements by selecting the eyeball to the right of each layer. Once you have done so, use the scroll bar and now unhide the pattern card stock layers. These layers are the long orange rectangles and the teal square and house insets. Arrange them on your canvas to your liking. Use your mouse to create a bounding box around each grouping, ATTACH them to your canvas (as described in step 4) and then select MAKE IT in the upper right corner.

After selecting make it, your Mat Preview window will open. You will see that your software has prepared two mats for you. Prepare your pattern card stock on your mats.

For example: I chose different pattern card stocks for my house and my stand and prepared my mats accordingly.

Select Continue in the lower right corner of your screen to open your Card Stock Cut Settings window. Check the operations of each mat. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to your mat. Load your machine and begin your cut. When your cut completes, return to the main canvas.

Step 9: Cut 3D Paper Birdhouse Opening Layers

Once you have finished cutting the pattern card stock layers, return to the main canvas and detach the layers from the canvas (as described in step 7). Use the layers scroll bar and hide all the elements that you just cut. Hide the elements by selecting the eyeball to the right of each layer. Use the scroll bar in the Layers panel to find the two circle layers. Ungroup, arrange and attach them on your mat. Then select MAKE IT in the upper right corner. The Mat Preview window will open to show both elements on the mat. Arrange your card stock on your mat to match the arrangement on your screen. When you are ready to proceed, select Continue in the lower right corner.

After selecting Continue your Card Stock Cut Settings window will open. Again, check the arrangement of the card stock on your mat to coordinate with the arrangement on your screen. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to your mat. When you are satisfied that everything is correct, load your mat and begin your cut.

Step 10: Cut the Kraft Board Layer

Once you have finished cutting the layers, return to the main canvas and detach the layers from the canvas (as described in step 7). Use the layers scroll bar and hide all the elements that you just cut. Hide the elements by selecting the eyeball to the right of each layer. Use the layers scroll bar to find the brown base layer and select the eyeball to unhide it. Then select MAKE IT in the upper right corner. Your Mat Preview screen will open and then select Continue in the lower right corner.

The Cut Settings window will now open. For cutting this layer, set your machine to Custom Material and select the Kraft Board cut setting. If you are using your Cricut Maker, again select the Kraft Board cut setting. Use your brayer to secure the Kraft Board to your Light Grip Cutting Mat. Load your machine and begin your cut. Once this cut ends, you have finished cutting all the layers.
