Instructions

Step 1: Download the 3D Shaker Love Letters Valentine’s Day Free SVG Cut File

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the newsletter form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the 3D Shaker Love Letters Valentine’s Day Free SVG Cut File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. You do not need to resize the design. It is ready to cut. Using the zoom button in the lower left corner, zoom out to at least 25%. This should, hopefully, allow you to view the entire design in your screen.

Upon zooming out, you will immediately see that the file is very large and has many different colored sections.

Here are meanings to the different sections:

  • Bright Red: These are the front heart embellishment layers of the design. I cut mine in pink glitter card stock.
  • Dark Red: These are the letter outline layers. I cut mine in white glitter card stock.
  • Yellow: These are the letter layers. I cut these on pattern card stock.
  • Hot Pink: These are the acetate letter layers. I cut these using clear, acetate paper.
  • Shades of Green: These are the base letter layers to form the 3D shape. Each shade of green represents the grouping for the letter. DO NOT change the colors or you may have difficulty determining which base goes with which letter. I also cut these in solid pink card stock.

Select the design and click UNGROUP in the top right corner, ONCE. This will ungroup the design from itself. Using the scroll bar in the LAYERS panel, go through and hide the Bright Red, Dark Red, Yellow and Hot Pink groupings. These will all be cut later. You can hide the groupings by selecting the group in the LAYERS panel and then clicking on the eyeball directly to the right of the layer.

Step 3: Change Cut Lines to SCORE lines

Once only the shades of green groupings remain, move over to the LAYERS panel and look for the solid cut lines. Select the cut line, then move over to the OPERATION tab and change the operation from Basic Cut to SCORE. At this time, you will notice that the lines in the LAYERS panel have changed from solid lines to dashed lines. You will also notice this change on the canvas as well–dashed lines will appear on the elements of the design. Do this step for ALL the solid cut lines.

You will change ELEVEN (11) cut lines to SCORE lines!!

After you have changed all the cut lines to SCORE lines, scroll through your LAYERS panel and select a single letter grouping. Then click UNGROUP ONCE. Do this for a total of four (4) times (once for each letter grouping).

Step 4: Attach Score Lines and Its Base Cut Layer

Once you have ungrouped each letter grouping, return to your LAYERS panel. Individually select a grouping of SCORE line and its Base Cut Layer. Right click on the canvas for a drop-down menu to appear and select ATTACH. Or select ATTACH in the lower right corner.

You must attach ELEVEN (11) groupings of SCORE lines and its coordinating Base Cut Layer!!

After you have attached all eleven (11) Score Line and Base Cut Layer groupings, click Make in the upper right corner.

Step 5: Check Mat Preview

After you click Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When you are on this screen, you will see the software has prepared eight (8) mats for the cut. Take a few moments to scroll through the mats and view the elements. You should see that, ONLY, the mats with the Score Line and Base Cut Layer grouping (that we already attached to the mat), have the operation SCORE and Basic Cut.

Now, you can reduce the mat count by rearranging the elements on the mats so that you only need four (4) mats, thus four (4) sheets of card stock. However, you MUST remember which Score Line and Base Cut Layer grouping goes with each letter. I recommend that you KEEP the Score Line and Base Cut Layer groupings on the mats that the software has prepared and KEEP one (1) coordinating letter that goes with those groups. Rearrange/rotate the groupings on the mat but DO NOT remove them. Only move the letters around to different mats.

See my example of my “L” letter mat above. I moved the “O” and “E” to the mat and rearranged the elements so everything fits. Take a few moments to complete your rearranging.

Then once you have completed the rearranging, ensure that the first mat is selected. If the first mat is not selected the cut order will not match the order of your card stock.

Then select CONTINUE in the lower right corner.

Step 6: Medium Card Stock 80lb Cut Settings

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I am using the Medium Card Stock 80lb Cut Setting. Prepare your Light Grip mats and card stock. If you rearranged your elements, you may see that your mat count has been reduced to four (4). You will also need your scoring stylus/wheel. Use your Brayer to secure your card stock to the mat. Load and position your mat according to the mat guides. Begin your cut. Once you have finished your cut, return to the main canvas for the Pattern Card Stock cuts.

Step 7: Pattern Card Stock Cut Settings

When your cuts have completed and you have returned to your main canvas, go through the layers panel and hide (or delete) all the layers you just cut by selecting the eyeballs to the right of each layer. Then unhide the YELLOW Grouping Layer. This is our Pattern Card Stock Grouping. We will use pattern card stock for the cutting. No adjustments are necessary. Therefore, select Make in the upper right corner. Follow the prompts through the mat preview setting, adjusting, rotating, and rearranging the elements to your liking.

Please Note: I used two (2) different sheets of Pattern Card Stock for my cut. This means that only two (2) letters are on each mat. However, you can easily fit all the letters on one (1) mat if you are choosing to use only one (1) sheet of Pattern Card Stock.

Then select Continue to proceed to your Cut Settings window. Select the cut setting for Medium Card Stock 80lb Setting. Use your Brayer to secure the pattern card stock to your Light Grip Cutting Mat and select go. Once your cut has completed, return to the main canvas for the Acetate, Hot Pink Layer cuts.

Step 7: Acetate Card Stock Cut Settings

After your Pattern Card Stock cut has completed and you have returned to your main canvas, go through the layers panel and hide (or delete) the Yellow Grouping Layer by selecting the eyeball to the right of the layer. Then unhide (by selecting the layer and then the eyeball for) the Hot Pink Acetate Layer. Again, no adjustments are necessary. Select Make in the upper right corner. Follow the prompts through the mat preview setting, adjusting, rotating, and rearranging the elements to your liking. You can rearrange all four (4) letters to fit on one Acetate sheet. Then select Continue to proceed to your Cut Settings window.

On your cut setting window, select the cut setting for Acetate. If necessary, select Browse All Materials. You should be able to find the Acetate Cut Setting under the Plastic Grouping in the list. Check again to make sure that your machine will complete the Basic Cut. Use your Brayer to secure the Acetate to your Light Grip Cutting Mat and select go. Once your cut has complete, return to the main canvas for the Bright Red and Dark Red Glitter Layer cuts.

Step 8: Glitter Card Stock Cut Settings

When your Acetate cuts have completed and you have returned to your main canvas, go through the layers panel and hide (or delete) all the layers you just cut by selecting the eyeballs to the right of each layer. Then unhide (by selecting the layer and then the eyeball for) the Bright Red Layer Grouping and the Dark Red Layer Grouping. Again, no adjustments are necessary. So select Make in the upper right corner. Follow the prompts through the mat preview setting, adjusting, rotating, and rearranging the elements to your liking. You can rearrange all four (4) letters to fit on one Glitter sheet.

Please Note: I used two (2) different sheets of Glitter Card Stock for my cuts. My letters were cut on White Glitter Card Stock and my Heart Embellisments were cut on Pink Glitter Card Stock.

Then select Continue to proceed to your Cut Settings window. Select the setting for Glitter Card Stock. If necessary, click Browse All Materials and look for the setting. Check again to make sure that your machine will complete Basic Cut. Use your Brayer to secure the glitter card stock to your Light Grip Cutting Mat and select go.
