Treat bags are so much fun! You can put candy or trinkets inside them, but they can also serve as decor! This Free Christmas Santa Pants Bag is no exception! Fill this bag up with your favorite candy or trinket and gift it to someone this holiday season or make it part of your Christmas decor. Either way you decide you will have fun creating this Paper Craft on your Cricut, Silhouette or other cutting machine. Sroll below for the written tutorial and video assembly.

Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Explore. You could use your Cricut Maker or another similar cutting machine.
  • Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • One sheet of 24in x 12in Red Cardstock (you can use a 12in x 12in cardstock but you will need two sheets and you will need to hide one of the red elements and cut it separately from the rest)
  • One sheet of 12in x 12in Black cardstock
  • A scrap or one sheet of 8.5in x 11in white and yellow cardstock
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue.
  • Cricut Brayer

Step 1: Download the Free Christmas Santa Pants Bag SVG

You can download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can also get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder to your computer. Take note where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Free Christmas Santa Pants Bag File into Design Space and Ungroup

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. It is not necessary to resize the design. It will create a bag approximately 9in high x 6in wide x 2in deep. If you would like to make the bag larger, you can scale it larger BUT be sure to scale all the elements at the same time. Also, if you scale larger, you will need more paper. Or if you would like to make the bag smaller, again be sure to scale all the elements down at the same time.

Now, once the design it uploaded, select the design and click Ungroup in the upper right corner of your screen. After you click ungroup, you will need to hide the black, white and yellow elements of the bag. You can hide these layers by selecting the layers in the LAYERS panel and clicking the eyeball to the right of the layer.

Step 3: Prepare the SCORE lines

After you have hidden the layers, you must change the cut lines on the bag side pieces to SCORE lines. This is a necessary step otherwise the side pieces will cut into multiple sections and you will not be able to glue the bag together. In order to change the cut line to SCORE lines, select the solid cut line layer in the LAYERS panel. Then in the OPERATIONS panel, select the drop-down arrow and then click SCORE.

Step 4: Attach the Layer

Now that you have changed the cut lines to a SCORE lines, you must ATTACH the layers. Use your mouse to drag a box and select all the red layers. Right-click inside the box and a drop-down menu will open. Scroll and click ATTACH or you can select ATTACH in the lower right corner of your screen. Then select Make it in the upper right corner of your screen.

Step 5: Mat Preview

After you click Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When this screen first loads you will see a warning at the top that will let you know that you need to use a bigger mat. If you are using a 12in x 24in red card stock, click ok. If you are not using a 12in x 24in red cardstock but instead a 12in x 12in, return to the main canvas and hide one of the red layers. You will need to cut it separately.

After clicking ok or once you are on this screen, you will see the layers for the project. Check to make sure that your machine will perform both operations: Score and Basic Cut. Look towards the upper left of your screen and find where it shows the operations for score AND basic cut. If you do not see both of these operations, click cancel and repeat step 3 of changing the cut line on the bag side piece layers to SCORE lines. If both score and basic cut are visible, click continue at the bottom right.

Step 6: Cardstock Cut Settings

Once you have clicked continue, your next window will be your cardstock cut settings. For this craft, I will cut each layer on the Cardstock 80lb setting. Take note that your machine operation is Basic Cut and Score. Be sure to have your scoring stylus or wheel loaded into your machine. Again, when you are satisfied that everything is correct, begin your cut. After your cut completes, return back to your main canvas so that you can cut the remaining elements of the bag.

Step 7: Cut the Santa Bag Elements

After you have cut all the red layers and returned to your main canvas, hide all the red layers and unhide the remaining elements of the bag. Arrange them on your canvas and arrange your colored cardstock on your cutting mat to match your canvas screen. Select all the layers and attach them to your canvas as you did in step 4. Then select Make it and follow the prompts to cut the pieces.
