Scarecrows are humanoid decoys often placed in fields to discourage birds from feeding on seeds and crops. The name scarecrow is derived from its specific use against crows. But for our fun craft today we find our friendly scarecrow, in the field, with the birds. This craft will be perfect for your Fall Decor and for paper crafters. Utilize your favorite brand of colored card stock and your Cricut, Silhouette or other svg cutting machine. Scroll below for cutting steps and tips with your Cricut machine and a video assembly of the design. Enjoy and Happy Crafting!

-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Maker. You could use your Cricut Explore or another similar cutting machine.
  • Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue
  • Brayer
  • One (1) 8.5in x 11in sheet of card stock in Gray, Light Gray, White, Black, Pink, Light Pink, Brown, Dark Brown, Tan, Light Tan, Cream, Yellow, Dark Orange, Orange, Red, Light Blue, Dark Blue, and Dark Green
  • Two (2) 8.5in x 11in sheets of card stock in Green
  • Twine
  • Hot Glue

Step 1: Download the Cornfield Scarecrow Layered Free SVG Cut File

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the newsletter form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Cornfield Scarecrow Layered Free SVG Cut File

Once you have the folder and files extracted/unzipped, upload the Cornfield Scarecrow Layered FREE SVG Cut File into Cricut Design Space. The SVG will upload grouped together and does not need to be resized or ungrouped. The design is already sized to produce a sign that is approximately 8.8 in width x 8.4 in height. At this size you can use card stock that is 8.5in x 11in. Please Note: It is NOT recommended for you to size this design smaller. Many of the fine details of the design, like the eyes of the crow and the features of the scarecrow face are already very small. Choosing to size the design smaller will make those detail cuts even smaller and possibly harder for your machine to achieve.

TIP: If you have difficulty with using any of the small detail pieces, you could use sharpie, paint pens or even acrylic pens to draw the features onto the design.

However, if you wish to make the design larger you may do so by grabbing the handles around the bounding box of the design and moving your mouse until you achieve your desired size. Please Note: If you make the design larger you will need to use card stock that is 12in x 12in for several of the cut elements.

After you have the design uploaded on the canvas and at the size that you desire, select Make It in the upper right corner.

Step 3: Mat Preview

After you have selected Make It, a new window will open with your mat preview screen. On this screen you will see that the software has prepared twenty (20) mats for the cut. Use the scroll bar to the left and scroll through all the layers. Take note of each layer and the order of the layers.

When you are scrolling, take note of the layout of the elements on the different mats. You may need to ensure that the orientation of your paper is correct. Meaning your 8.5in x 11in card stock may need to be on your mat in the landscape or portrait position. Also, if you wish to rearrange any of the elements on any of the mats, you can do so by selecting the element on the mat and then moving it or using the rotate bar to the right of the selected element.

After you have finished making your adjustments to the elements and taken note of the card stock order, ensure that the first mat is selected. If the first mat is not selected the cut order will not match the order of your card stock.

When you are ready to begin your cut, select the Continue button in the lower right corner.

Step 4: Card Stock Cut Settings

After selecting Continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I will use the Custom Setting Card Stock for Intricate Cuts. Check again the order of the mats, arrangement of the elements and ensure that your card stock order matches the software order. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to your mat. Once you are ready to cut, load your mat into your machine and begin.

TIP: For the Scarecrow pants and shirt, I originally cut the layers using plain, colored card stock. I then decided to use pattern card stock for these layers and went back to cut them out separately. If you are using pattern sheets and depending on the weight of your papers, you may need to adjust your settings.
