Do you love making shadowboxes?? If you do, then this new freebie is just for you! I have for you a FREE 4th of July Butterfly Shadowbox. Use this project to create new 4th of July decor and I can’t wait to see yours!

For this project, I will be using a Cricut Explore however you can use your cutting machine that accepts SVG cut files. (An EPS and DXF file is also included).

-Materials List

Instructions

Step 1: Download the 4th of July Butterfly Shadowbox SVG

Download the SVG file from my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder to your computer. Be sure to note where on your computer the folder downloaded and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the SVG File into Design Space; Resize if Needed

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The design is pre-sized to cut at 8.5in x 8.5in. A typical 9×9 shadowbox will have an art space of 8.5in x 8.5in. However, please measure your shadowbox to confirm these measurements for your shadowbox prior to cutting.

If you are using a larger shadowbox AND you have larger card stock sheets, you will need to re-size the design. Re-sizing the design is easy. When the SVG will loads into Design Space, all the layers will be grouped together. Select the design and type the dimensions needed in the upper tool bar. Make sure the lock icon is in the closed position so that the design will re-size proportionately. See the picture below for where in Design Space you can change the dimensions.

Step 3: Mat Preview

Once you have the design at your correct measurements, click Make It in the upper right corner.

When you click Make It, your screen will change to show you the order that the layers will cut. However, take note of the order of the layers on the left side of the screen. Most likely, the layer order will be out of sequence. Study the order and arrange your layers/mats in the order shown so that you cut the correct layers on the correct color. When you have your layers and mats lined up, select continue.

Step 4: Choosing Your Materials

Your next screen will give you the option to select your materials. I typically use Medium card stock, however, when I am cutting intricate designs, such as this one, I will utilize the Card stock for Intricate Cuts setting. But if you are using specialty paper you may need to choose a different setting. Click Browse All Materials to see your options. Also remember to use your brayer to secure your card stock to your mats. When you have selected your materials, load your mat and begin to cut your layers.

Once your cut is complete, make sure that you peel the mat away from the card stock instead of peeling the card stock away from the mat. Doing so will prevent any curling of the card stock. And remember to peel slowly and gently so that you do not accidentally rip any delicate areas of the design. Repeat these steps for all the additional layers.

Step 5: Assemble Your 4th of July Butterfly Shadowbox

That’s it! All Done! You are now ready to assemble your butterfly shadowbox. Check out this video of the assembly!
