Paper crafting is one of my favorite activities! I find it amazing how we can take a flat piece of paper and with a bit of manipulation and creativity we can make it into so much more. And one of my favorite seasons to craft for is Christmas. As the weather begins to cool and the holidays come onto the horizon, I start thinking about warming up by the fire with blankets and hot cocoa. These thoughts are the inspiration for this FREE Gnome Hot Cocoa Station SVG. It’s definitely one of my more time-consuming crafts with the various parts to cut and assemble but I promise the end result will be well worth it. Let’s get started!

Instructions

Step 1: Download the Free Gnome Hot Cocoa Station SVG

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Free Gnome Hot Cocoa Station SVG File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. Click ungroup in the upper right corner ONCE to ungroup the design from itself. Different sections of the design are grouped together, DO NOT ungroup those sections…yet.

Step 3: Cut the Stand Base, Roof and Posts

Using the scroll tab on the right of your screen, scroll through the layers and click the eyeball to the right of each layer to HIDE ALL the layers that are not the stand base, roof and posts.

For the stand base, roof and post layers, change each solid cut line to SCORE line. Make this change by clicking the solid cut line layer in your layers panel, then in the operations tab click the drop-down menu, and click SCORE. Repeat this step for every solid cut line of the base, roof and posts. After you have clicked SCORE, each layer will read SCORE.

Rearrange the layout of the pieces so that they will fit and cut on a 12in x 24in mat. Select all the pieces with your mouse and right-click inside the selected area. Select attach in the drop-down menu, then click Make it.

Step 4: Check Mat Preview and Cardstock Cut Settings

A new window will open with your mat preview. If your screen opens with the warning that your cut exceeds 11.5in in width or height, click ok. Your mat and cardstock will cut correctly since the width of the base is 11.4in. However, double check that your machine will cut AND score your cardstock. Click Ok.

After clicking ok, a new window will open with your Cardstock Cut Settings. For this entire project I will be using the Cardstock Medium 80lb setting. Again, double check that your machine will cut AND score the cardstock. Load your mat with your 12in x 24in BROWN cardstock. Use your Cricut Brayer to secure your cardstock to the mat. Load your machine. Click ok to begin your cut.

Once your machine has finished cutting, return back to your canvas.

Step 5: Cut the Gnome Side, Base Front and Back, Mug Top, Bottom and Side and Snowflakes

After you have returned to the canvas, DETACH the brown base layers. Detach the layers by right-clicking on the canvas and select the DETACH button in the pop-up menu. Then scroll your layer panel and HIDE ALL the base, roof and post layers just cut.

Scroll the layers panel and UNHIDE the gnome side, base front and back, mug top, bottom and side and snowflake layers. Unhide the layers by clicking the eyeball to the far right of the layer. Follow the steps described above to SCORE the solid cut line on the gnome side and mug side layers. Duplicate the mug and snowflake layers if you want to place more than one on your project. Select all the layers on your canvas, right-click inside your selection and click attach. Click Make it. Follow step 4 to check your mat preview and cardstock setting. Load your mat with WHITE cardstock, secure it with your brayer and begin your cut. Once your cut is complete, return to the canvas.

Step 6: Cut the Base Front and Sign Back

After you are back at the canvas, detach and hide the layers just cut. (See Step 5 for how to detach and hide just cut layers).

Scroll your layers panel and UNHIDE the Base front and Sign Back. Unhide the layers by clicking the eyeball to the far right of the layer. Select both layers, right-click in the selection and attach the layers to the canvas. Click Make it and follow step 4 to check your mat preview and cardstock setting. Load your mat with TAN cardstock, secure it with your brayer and begin your cut. Once your cut is complete, return to the canvas.

Step 7: Cut the Sign and Banner Front

Detach and hide the layers just cut. (See Step 5 for how to detach and hide just cut layers).

Scroll through the layers panel and UNHIDE the front of the sign and the front of the banner. Unhide the layers by clicking the eyeball to the far right of the layer. Once again, select the layers, right-click in the selection and attach the layers to the canvas. Select Make it and follow step 4 to check your mat preview and cardstock setting. Load your mat with RED cardstock, secure it with your brayer and begin your cut. Once your cut is complete, return to the canvas.

Step 8: Cut the Gnome Clothes, Beard, Nose, Banner Back, and Mug Handle and Front Layer

Detach and hide the layers just cut. (See Step 5 for how to detach and hide just cut layers).

Scroll through the layers panel and UNHIDE the remaining layers. This would be the Gnome clothes, beard, nose, banner back and mug handle and front layers. Unhide the layers by clicking the eyeball to the far right of the layer. On your canvas, click the gnome. He is grouped together. Click ungroup in the upper right corner. Separate the layers of the gnome on the canvas. Take note of the position of each layer on the canvas. Match this position with the colored/pattern cardstock on your mat. Make sure that your mug handle, mug front layer and banner back are also in the position of the coordinating-colored cardstock on your mat.

After everything is placed to your liking, select all the layers on your canvas, right-click and select attach in the drop-down menu. Select Make it and follow step 4 to check your mat preview (match the layers of your preview with the cardstock on your mat) and your cardstock setting. Secure the cardstock to the mat with your brayer and begin your cut.
