It will be the coolest item for you to give out to your Trick or Treaters or at the school Halloween party for kiddos. You can even surprise your co-workers with this fun project. Or simply craft it for yourself! I am so excited to see your creation and hear how you used it.

For this project, I will be using a Cricut Explore however you can use a cutting machine that accepts SVG cut files. (An EPS and DXF file are also included in the compressed zip folder). To make this project follow the steps outlined below. Step by step instructions for the cutting and assembly and what materials I used to complete the project are below. First thing to always remember, is to ungroup the design inside your cutting machine software and change the solid cut lines to SCORE lines, then attach the group before cutting. Let’s get started!

-Materials List

Step 1: Download the Free Halloween 3D Coffin Treat Box SVG

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can also get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Free Halloween 3D Coffin Treat Box SVG File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. For this project it is not necessary to ungroup the design.

Step 3: Change Cut Line to SCORE lines

Once uploaded, you will need to convert the outline cut lines to a SCORE lines This step is necessary to prevent the design from cutting in multiple pieces. In the LAYERS panel, scroll until you see the outline cut lines. Click the outline cut line for the coffin base and the coffin top. Then move over to the OPERATION tab and change it from Basic Cut to SCORE. After clicking score, you will notice that the term in the LAYERS panel will also change to SCORE.

Step 4: Attach the layers

Before you attach the layers, the coffin top insert must be hidden so that it can be cut later and on a separate mat. Find the coffin insert in the layers panel. It should appear as the orange coffin shape. Click the eyeball beside it, in that layer, to hide it. Once hidden, parts of the coffin lid will be transparent to the canvas mat.

Now drag your mouse across the layers on the canvas screen to create a box around the design and score lines. You can also click the layers one by one in the layers panel (not clicking the orange coffin insert) while simultaneously holding down the shift key. Then, right click in the box you just created, and a pop-up menu will appear. Scroll to find and click the ATTACH button. You can also click the ATTACH button towards the bottom right of your screen. Then click Make it in the upper top corner.

Step 5: Check Mat Preview

After clicking Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When you are on this screen, you will see the layers for the coffin lid and coffin top. The score lines will not be visible, but they are there. Check to make sure that your machine will perform both operations: Score and Basic Cut. Look towards the upper left of your screen and find where it shows the operations for score AND basic cut. If you do not see both of these operations, click cancel and repeat step 3 to change the cut line to a score line. If both score and basic cut are visible, click continue at the bottom right.

Step 6: Cardstock Cut Settings

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I set my machine to Custom Material and chose the Cardstock for Intricate Cuts. If you do not have this setting, I would recommend choosing a different setting that will slow down your cutting blade. Check again to make sure that your scoring stylus/wheel and blade are loaded. After you have completed this check, you are ready to begin your cut.

Step 7: Load Mat and Cut Materials

Load the mat with your 12in x 12in black cardstock or whichever color you are using for the coffin. Use your brayer to secure the cardstock on the mat. Then load the mat into your machine. Make sure that your mat is positioned and lined up according to the mat guides. You will know your machine is ready to cut when you see the flashing “c” button. Press that button to start your cut.

Step 8: Cut the Coffin Top Insert

After you have cut the coffin layers, you must return to your main canvas to cut the coffin top insert. Once you are on the main canvas, hide the coffin box layers and score lines by clicking the eyeball on the respective layers. Follow the described steps above to attach the coffin insert, check your preview, and choose your cardstock cut settings. Then load and cut the insert.
