For this tutorial, I will be using a Cricut Explore however you can use a cutting machine that accepts SVG cut files. (An EPS and DXF file are also included). To make this Halloween Black Cat Treat Box follow the steps outlined below. Step by step instructions for the assembly and what materials I used to complete the project are below. First thing to remember, is to ungroup the design inside your cutting machine software and change the solid cut line to a SCORE line, then attach the group before cutting.

-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Explore. You could use your Cricut Maker, Silhouette or another similar cutting machine.
  • Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Black Cardstock. I will be using 12in x 12in sheet.
  • Orange Cardstock. I will be using a 8.5in x 11in sheet. If you have orange scraps that will work also.
  • Cricut Brayer
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue

Instructions

Step 1: Download the FREE Halloween Black Cat Treat Box SVG

Download the SVG file from my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder to your computer. Be sure to note where on your computer the folder downloaded and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the SVG File into Design Space and Ungroup

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. First, you need to ungroup the file. Click the design and then in the upper right corner, click the ungroup button.

Step 3: Change Cut Line to SCORE lines

After you have ungrouped the file, you will need to convert the solid fold line to a SCORE line. This step is necessary to prevent the box from cutting in multiple pieces. In the LAYERS panel, scroll until you see the solid cut line that resembles the letter H. Click it, then move over to the OPERATION tab and change it from Basic Cut to SCORE. At this time, you will notice that the term in the LAYERS panel has changed to SCORE. Next, you will need to hide the cut layers for the cat face. In the LAYERS panel, click the eyeballs to hide each cut.

Step 4: Attach the Box Layer and SCORE line

Now that you have changed the cut line to a SCORE line AND hidden the cat face cut layers, you are ready to attach. Drag your mouse across the layers on the canvas screen to create a box around the cat box and score line or click the layers one by one in the layers panel while simultaneously holding down the shift key. Then, right click in the box you just created, and a pop-up menu will appear. Scroll to find the ATTACH button. You can also click on the ATTACH button towards the bottom right of your screen. Then click Make it in the upper top corner.

Step 5: Check Mat Preview

Once you click Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When you are on this screen, you will see the cat box layer for the project. You will NOT be able to see the score lines because of the color of the cat box. However, you can check to make sure that your machine will perform both operations: Score and Basic Cut. Look towards the upper left of your screen and find where it shows the operations for score AND basic cut. If you do not see both of these operations, click cancel and repeat step 3 of changing the cut line to a score line. If both score and basic cut are visible, click continue at the bottom right.

Step 6: Cardstock Cut Settings

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I am using Medium Cardstock 80lb but because of the intricacy of the cat face, I will cut on Cardstock for Intricate cuts. Check again to make sure that your scoring stylus and blade are loaded. After you have completed this check, you are ready to begin your cut.

Step 7: Load Mat and Cut Materials

Load the mat with your black cardstock. Use your brayer to secure the cardstock to the mat. Then load the mat into your machine by pressing the double arrows. Make sure that your mat is positioned and lined up according to the mat guides. You will know your machine is ready to cut when you see the flashing “c” button. Press that button to start your cut.

Step 8: Cut the Free Halloween Black Cat Treat Box SVG Face

After you have cut the cat box layer, you must return to the main canvas in order to cut out the cat face. Once you are on the main canvas, hide the cat box layer and cut lines by clicking the eyeball on the respective layers. Follow the described steps above to attach the cat face, check your preview, choose your cardstock cut settings, load and cut the face.
