Do you like to give money for Christmas? Sometimes, I find that money is a quick, simple and easy gift to give, especially when I get delayed in shopping. But I don’t always like to give it in a card. For me, it can sometimes seem impersonal and well, blah. LOL. However, that is the inspiration for this FREE Santa in a Chimney Money Box Holder SVG. I believe that this is a super fun way for you, the giver, to gift money in a non-conventional way! So, in this post you will find a written and video tutorial to help you craft this fun holder. I hope you enjoy it. And, as always, happy crafting!

Instructions

Step 1: Download the Santa in a Chimney Holder SVG

You can download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can also get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder to your computer. Take note where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the SVG File into Design Space and Ungroup

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. First, you need to ungroup the file. Click the design and then in the upper right corner, click the ungroup button.

Step 3: Prepare and Cut out the Chimney Base

Once you click ungroup, the file will separate into four sections. One section will be the chimney base, another section will be the front of Santa, then the back of Santa and the last section will be the snow caps. Our first section to cut will be the chimney base. In order to do so we need to hide the other sections. When you click each section, the layers of that section will highlight in the layers panel. At the top of the highlighted section, in the layers panel, click the eyeball. This will automatically hide the layers. Do this for all the sections except the chimney base.

First, hide the section for Santa’s back. Click the group and then click the eyeball for the section in the layers panel.

Hide the section for Santa’s front. Click the group and then click the eyeball for the section in the layers panel.

Hide the snow caps. Click the snow cap group and then click the eyeball for the snow caps in the layers panel.

After you have hidden the snow caps, Santa front and back, click the chimney base. Clicking will highlight the layers of the chimney base in the layers panel. Find the eyeball for black brick layer and click it to hide it.

Once you have hidden the black brick layer, you must change the solid cut lines of the chimney base to SCORE lines. This step is necessary to prevent the holder from cutting into multiple pieces. Click the chimney base. In the LAYERS panel, scroll until you find the solid line labeled as a cut line. Click it, then move over to the OPERATION tab and change the operation from Basic Cut to SCORE.

At this time, you will notice that the term in the LAYERS panel has changed to SCORE. Now that you have changed the cut line to SCORE, you are ready to attach. Select all the layers by right-clicking and dragging your mouse across the layers on the mat or click the layers one by one on the layers panel while simultaneously holding down the shift key. Right click in the box you just dragged, and a pop-up menu will appear. Then scroll to find the ATTACH button. Not only can you click there but you can also click on the ATTACH button towards the bottom right of your screen. Then click Make it in the upper top corner.

Once you click Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. On this screen, you will see the layers for the project. Check to make sure that your machine will perform two operations: Score and Basic Cut. And if everything is placed according to your liking, click continue at the bottom right.

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I am using Medium Cardstock 80lb. Load onto your mat one sheet of red 12in x 12in cardstock and load into your machine. Check again to make sure that your scoring stylus and blade are loaded. After you have completed this check, you are ready to begin your cut of the chimney base!

Step 4: Cut out the Black Brick Layer

After cutting out the red chimney base, it’s time to cut the black brick layer of the chimney base. Return to your canvas screen. Detach the chimney from the canvas (right-click in the canvas area and select detach) and hide the score line and base. Click on the eyeball to unhide the black brick layer. Click Make it in the upper corner and follow the steps described above to cut out the brick layer.

Step 5: Cut out Santa’s Body

Now that you have cut out the chimney base and brick layer, it is time to cut out the remaining sections. Return to your canvas screen. Detach the chimney from the canvas and hide the chimney base and brick layer. Click the eyeballs to un-hide both sections of Santa’s body. Once they are unhidden, hide the layer of black boots, belt, white sections and yellow buckle by clicking the eyeballs again. Then change the solid cut line on each section of Santa’s body to a SCORE line.

Follow the same steps to ATTACH Santa body to canvas. Click Make it and check your mat preview and also check to make sure that your machine will perform two operations: Score and Basic Cut. And if everything is placed according to your liking, click continue at the bottom right. Again, your next screen will have your menu selection. Choose your paper type, load your mat with another red 12in x 12in red cardstock. Check again to make sure that your scoring stylus and blade are loaded and then begin your cut of Santa’s body!

Step 6: Cut out Santa Boots, Buckle, Socks, Uniform and Snow Caps

After you have cut out Santa’s body, you are now ready to cut out the remaining last pieces. Return to your main canvas. Detach Santa’s body from the canvas and use the eyeballs in the layers panel to hide it. Unhide the remaining sections left to cut; boots, buckle, uniform and snow caps. As you click on each section, you will need to click ungroup.

Then rearrange and group the pieces according to color. You can now Attach them to cut all on one mat.

Line up the colored cardstock accordingly on your Light Grip mat so that it matches your canvas mat inside Design Space and follow the steps above to cut them out. This will complete the cutting machine part of the craft.
