Witch Hat Treat Box SVG

-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Explore. You could use your Cricut Maker or another similar cutting machine.
  • Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Cricut Scoring Wheel or Stylus
  • 12in x 12in 80lb Cardstock. I am using black. This will be for the hat base, box, and hat top. However, you can have fun and use different Halloween colors, or you can use fun patterned cardstock!
  • 8.5in x 11in Cardstock. I am using brown, white and black and white polka dot cardstock. These colors will be used for the broom, hat buckle, and hat stripe But, again, you can choose colors that you prefer!
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue.
  • Cricut Brayer
  • Ruler or Bone Folder tool.

Step 1: Download the Free Witch Hat Treat Box SVG

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can also get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Free Witch Hat Treat Box SVG File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. Select all the contents of the file and click the ungroup button ONCE in the upper right corner of your screen.

Step 3: Change Cut Line to SCORE lines

Once the design has been ungrouped, you will need to convert the thin cut lines to a SCORE lines This step is necessary to prevent the design from cutting in multiple pieces. In the LAYERS panel, scroll and look for all the thin cut lines. There will be three layers of thin cut lines to select. Click each line and hold the control button to select them all simultaneously. Then move over to the OPERATION tab and change it from Basic Cut to SCORE. After clicking score, you will notice that the term in the LAYERS panel will also change to SCORE.

Once you have changed the thin cut lines to SCORE lines, hide the broom, hat buckle and hat ribbon layers. Those will be cut later. Hide the layers by clicking on the eyeball to the far right on each layer.

Step 4: Attach the layers

Once you have hidden the broom, hat buckle and hat ribbon layers, attach the pieces to the canvas by dragging your mouse across the layers on the canvas screen to create a box around the pieces and score lines. Then, right click in the box you just created, and a pop-up menu will appear. Scroll to find and click the ATTACH button. You can also click the ATTACH button towards the bottom right of your screen. Then click Make it in the upper top corner.

Step 5: Check Mat Preview

After clicking Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When you are on this screen, you will see the layers for the hat base, hat box and hat lid. The score lines will not be visible, but they are there. Check to make sure that your machine will perform both operations: Score and Basic Cut. Look towards the upper left of your screen and find where it shows the operations for score AND basic cut. If you do not see both of these operations, click cancel and repeat step 3 to change the cut line to a score line. If both score and basic cut are visible, click continue at the bottom right.

Step 6: Cardstock Cut Settings

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I will cut on the Cardstock 80lb setting. Check again to make sure that your scoring stylus/wheel and blade are loaded. After you have completed this check, you are ready to begin your cut.

Step 7: Load Mat and Cut Materials

Load the mat with your 12in x 12in black cardstock or whichever color/pattern you are using. Use your brayer to secure the cardstock on the mat. Then load the mat into your machine. Make sure that your mat is positioned and lined up according to the mat guides. You will know your machine is ready to cut when you see the flashing “c” button. Press the button to start your cut.

Step 8: Cut the Broom, Hat Buckle and Hat Ribbon Layers

Now that you have cut the hat base, hat box, and hat lid layers, it is time to cut the remaining pieces. Return back to the main canvas and hide the layers just cut by clicking the eyeballs to the right of each layer. Then unhide the broom, hat buckle and hat ribbon layers by once again clicking the eyeballs to the right of each layer. Select the broom layer, then click ungroup to separate the front of the broom from the back of the broom.

For my project, I will use a black and white paper for the hat ribbon, white cardstock for the hat buckle and the back of the broom and brown cardstock for the front of the broom. However, your paper combinations might be different, therefore these next few steps may differ. PRO TIP: You could also use Halloween ribbon for the hat ribbon instead of cutting out the layer on cardstock. Simply glue the ribbon around the hat lid in the same area that the cardstock would go. Regardless of your paper combination, rearrange and line up the pieces on your mat(s) according to how you would like to cut them. Attach the pieces to the canvas by following the procedure in step 4. Then check your mat preview (be sure to check that your machine will score AND cut the hat ribbon) and choose your cardstock cut setting.
