-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Maker. You could use your Cricut Explore or another similar cutting machine.
  • Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue
  • Brayer
  • One (1) 12in x 12in sheet of card stock in White, Gray, Brown, Light Blue, Pink
  • One (1) 12in x 12in sheet of Kraft Board (This is the set I have and use–This is not necessary to the craft but adds a bit of sturdiness to the design)
  • Light Pink Yarn
  • Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks

Step 1: Download the Ice Skates Layered Winter Paper Craft Free SVG Cut File

You can download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can also get the password for my library by filling out the form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder to your computer. Take note where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Ice Skates Layered Winter Paper Craft Free SVG Cut File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together and is prepared to cut just the way it is. You can see that the file is designed to create an Ice Skate that is approximately 6.4in x 5.8in. You do not need to resize or ungroup anything. However, if you wish to make your skates larger or smaller, select both skates, grab the handle bars at the edge of your bounding box and drag it outwards or inwards to make it larger or smaller.

Please know that if you make the design larger, you may need larger or more card stock.

After you have sized your design to the size that you want, scroll through the LAYERS panel until you see both HOT PINK skate layers. Select both layers and then click the eyeball to the right of the layer. This will hide these layers until we are ready to cut them on Kraft board. Once you have hidden the layers, select Make in the upper right corner.

Step 3: Mat Preview

Once you have selected Make It, a new window will open with your mat preview screen. On this screen you will see that the software has prepared ten (10) mats for the cut. There are ten (10) mats because of how the software has aligned each element. But we can cut this amount in half (unless you sized the design really big). Take note of each layer. You will see that there is a duplicate of each layer. Select one element on a layer, click the three dots to the top left of the bounding box and select Move Object. A pop-up window will open, select the other mat that is the same color and click confirm. This will move the element to the second mat. Then rearrange all the elements by using the rotate icon (found to the upper right of the element once selected) to ensure that everything fits on one 12x12in mat.

Adjust all the mats and once you have made your adjustments to the mats, take note of the mat order and ensure that the first mat is selected. If the first mat is not selected, the cut order will not match the order of your card stock.

When you are ready to begin your cut, select the Continue button in the lower right corner.

Step 4: Card Stock Setting, Load Mat and Cut Materials

After selecting Continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. You should see that your mat count has dropped to five or by half. For this project, I will use the Card Stock for Intricate Cuts Setting. Check again the order of the mats, arrangement of the elements and ensure that your card stock order matches the software order. Use your Brayer to secure your card stock to your mat. Once you are ready to cut, load your mat into your machine and begin. When your cut has finished, return to the main canvas to cut the Kraft Board Layer.

Step 5: Cut Kraft Board Layer

When you have returned to your main canvas, go through the layers panel and hide all the layers you just cut by selecting the eyeballs to the right of each layer. Then unhide (by selecting the eyeball again) the Hot Pink layers–you should see two layers. Select Make in the upper right corner. Again, rearrange the elements so that both skates fit on one (1) 12x12in mat. Select Continue in the lower right corner of your screen to get to your Cut Settings window. Select the cut setting for Kraft Board. If necessary Browse All Materials until you find the setting. Check again to make sure that your machine will complete the Basic Cut. Use your Brayer to secure the kraft board to your Light Grip Cutting Mat and select go.
