Lighthouses are amazing structures that are usually constructed to guide ships and boats through hazardous areas like rocky coastlines, sandbars or dangerous reefs and shoals. By emitting a powerful beam of light, they also serve as a prominent reference point for navigation helping sailors determine their course during the night or in poor weather conditions. Lighthouses also hold great historical and cultural value in the coastal communities. They are ofter structured recognized and preserved as part of a coastal town’s identity and heritage. Symbolically lighthouses are associated with guidance, safety and hope. They represent light in the darkness, steadfastness and offer encouragement to many to remain grounded and focused when navigating the journey of life.

Instructions

Step 1: Download the Layered Lighthouse Free SVG Cut File

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the newsletter form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Layered Lighthouse Free SVG Cut File

Upload the Layered Lighthouse FREE SVG Cut File into Cricut Design Space. The SVG will upload grouped together and is sized to produce a lighthouse that is approximately 6 in width x 8in height. The design does not need to be resized or ungrouped. However, if you wish to make the design larger or smaller you may do so by grabbing the handles around the bounding box of the design and moving your mouse until you achieve your desired size. Please Note: The smaller you size the design, the more difficult it may be for your machine to cut.

Once you have the design uploaded on the canvas and at the size that you desire, select Make It in the upper right corner.

Step 3: Mat Preview

Once you have selected Make It, a new window will open with your mat preview screen. On this screen you will see that the software has prepared ten (10) mats for the cut. Use the scroll bar to the left and scroll through all the layers. Take note of each layer and the order of the layers.

When you are scrolling you will note that the software has prepared three (3) mats that have red elements If you wish to rearrange these elements to fit on two (2) mats continue to Step 4. If you do not wish to rearrange any elements, select Continue in the lower right corner and proceed to Step 5. Please Note: You will not be able to fit all three (3) red elements on one mat.

Step 4: Move and Rearrange the Blue Truck Layers

Using the scroll bar to the left of your screen, scroll until you locate the three red mats. We will need to move one of the red layers to one of the other two red mats so that both elements will cut on one 12in x 12in sheet. Please Note: If you wish to use only 8.5in x 11in sheets, skip this step and proceed directly to step 5.

Select a red element and click the three dots that appear at the upper left corner of the bounding box. Then select Move Object. A new mini-window will open and you must select the one of the other two red mats. Click continue to close the window.

After you have selected continue, select the mat that now has both of the red elements. Select one of the elements and rearrange both elements until both fit on the mat without overlapping. To minimize waste, I rotated mine so that it was flipped 180 degrees and also moved it in as close as possible to the other element. Remember if the layers overlap in any way, they will not cut correctly.

Return to the scroll bar and scroll though all of the prepared mats. Again, take note of the order and colors of the mats. Then select the first mat! It is crucial that you select the first mat after determining the order. If you do not, the cut order of the mats will not be correct.

Once you are certain of the order of your mats and the arrangement of the elements on each mat, select the CONTINUE button at the lower right corner of your screen.

Step 5: Card Stock Cut Settings

After selecting Continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I will use the Custom Setting Card Stock for Intricate Cuts. Check again the order of the mats, arrangement of the elements and ensure that your card stock order matches the software order. You should notice that the software has changed the number of your mats to nine (9) if you rearranged the red elements and ten (10) if you did not rearrange the red elements. Use your brayer to secure your card stock to your mat. Once you are ready to cut, load your mat into your machine and begin.
