-Materials List

  • I am using my Cricut Explore. You could use your Cricut Maker or another similar cutting machine.
  • 12in x 12in Light Grip Cutting Mat
  • Cricut Scoring Wheel or Stylus
  • Brayer (to secure card stock to the mat)
  • Four (4) 12in x 12in sheet of card stock in White
  • One (1) 8.5in x 11in sheet of card stock in Black (represented by green in the cutting steps photos)
  • One (1) 8.5in x 11in sheet of card stock in a Winter or Christmas Pattern (represented by yellow in the cutting steps photos)
  • A scrap of card stock in Orange, Brown and Light Brown
  • Glue. I am using Art Glitter Glue.

Step 1: Download the Snowman Nesting Blocks Free SVG

Download the SVG file in my free Resource Library HERE. You can get the password for my library by filling out the newsletter form at the bottom of this post.

Save the downloaded zipped folder on your computer. Pay attention to where on your computer the folder downloads and then unzip the folder to extract the contents. The folder and files must be unzipped (extracted) before you can upload the SVG file into your cutting software.

Step 2: Upload the Snowman Nesting Blocks Free SVG File into Design Space

Upload the SVG file into Cricut Design Space. The SVG file will upload grouped together. Once uploaded, you will need to ungroup the file ONCE and only ONCE.

Step 3: Change Cut Lines to SCORE lines

After you have ungrouped the file, in the LAYERS panel, look for the solid cut lines. Select them, then move over to the OPERATION tab and change the operation from Basic Cut to SCORE. At this time, you will notice that the lines in the LAYERS panel have changed from solid lines to dashed lines. You will also notice this change on the canvas as well–dashed lines will appear on the elements of the design.

You will change 10 (TEN) cut lines to SCORE lines!!

Please also note that the green elements represent black card stock. The elements are only green so that you can view the change of the SCORE lines in the software. Please also note that the yellow elements represent pattern card stock.

Step 4: Attach Envelope and Card Layers

After changing the cut lines to SCORE, you are ready to attach. Select each grouping of SCORE line and colored element. Right click on the design to make the drop-down menu appear and select the ATTACH button. Or you can also select the ATTACH button towards the bottom right of your screen.

You will need to ATTACH 10 (ten) groups of SCORE line and cut element! You must also ATTACH them individually.

Once you have finished attaching all 10 (ten) groups of SCORE line and cut element, select Make in the upper right corner.

Step 5: Check Mat Preview

After you click Make it, a new window will open with your mat preview. When you are on this screen, you will see the software has prepared eleven (11) mats for the project. Take a few moments to scroll through the mats and view the elements. Use the scroll bar to the left to check to make sure that your machine will perform the operations: Score and Basic Cut. This is also a time for you to rearrange some of the elements to reduce your number of mats.

Your software will have prepared five (5) white mats. You can rearrange the white elements so that the number drops to 4. You can also take the black elements for the smile and eyes and move them to your green mat. Your green mat will actually be for black card stock. This rearrangement will also reduce your mat count by one.

Lastly, take note of the order of the mats. Arrange your card stock and mats to match the order on your screen. Once you are certain of the order of the mats and that all the functions are complete, make sure that your first mat is again selected. Then click CONTINUE in the lower right corner of your screen.

Step 6: Intricate Cuts Card Stock Cut Settings

Once you click continue, your next screen will have your material selection menu. For this project, I am using the card stock setting of Card Stock for Intricate Cuts Setting. You will also need your scoring stylus/wheel. Check to make sure that your Light Grip mats are in the correct order and match the sequence your software has prepared. If you rearranged your elements, you should see that your mat count has been reduced to nine (9). After you have completed this check, you are ready to begin your cut.

Make sure your mat is loaded with your card stock in the correct position/arrangement. Use your brayer to secure the card stock on the mat. Load and position your mat according to the mat guides. Begin your cut.
